Mikołajki: White Squall
On August 21, 2007, Mazury went through a strong storm, which is colloquially known as the ” White Squall”. The temperature dropped from 28° C to 16° C in a short time and the wind speed reached 126 km / h. The waves were 2 and 3 meters high at Mikołajskie Lake and Śniardwy Lake respectively. The storm left a lot of damage in the city, and on the water it caused the capsizing of 40 water bodies. 87 sailors were saved, however, 12 never returned to the port. Most of them lost their lives on Mikołajskie Lake. The last victim of “White Squall” was found only on September 30, 2007. In the same year, on November 3, in the church of Our Lady of the Rosary, the first Nautical Sums were held in honor of people who lost their lives on the water. In its course, a monument commemorating the victims and a cross made of broken mast elements were unveiled. Tradition of Nautical Sums is still cultivated in Mikołajki.
